Chlo Sevigny admits that she was often "picked on" as a youth.
The 37-year-old actress is famed for her alternative lifestyle and highly expressive sense of fashion.
Chlo wasn't always respected for her individuality.
While growing up in Darien, Connecticut she was often tormented.
"I know [my parents] worked really long hours to live there, but I don't think I'd subject my children to that kind of upbringing," Chlo told British newspaper the Independent. "I don't think they realised the snobbery that happened in the school and how kids without as much money would be picked on. I was picked on... not that we were a poor house. I still feel a bit of a loner."
When Chlo was 19-year-old, she was profiled by author Jay McInerney for a seven-page feature in esteemed magazine The New Yorker.
"I remember going out with [Jay] one night to the Tunnel [club in New York City]," she recalled. "I felt it was kind of a privilege... this guy was an iconic New Yorker, writing a story about me. I guess it was a bit weird because I was so young. I remember him coming home to Darien. I knew what The New Yorker meant, my dad had a subscription. I knew it was very high-brow. I felt intimidated by that, maybe not feeling worthy. But I guess people are interested in youth. I mean people haven't stopped talking about it 20 years later."
