(Cover) - EN Star Style - Christina Hendricks has revealed she was a goth and a little punk in high school.

The 35-year-old Mad Men star, who plays office manager Joan Holloway in the hit TV series, is now a renowned beauty, but insists that when she was younger she got no attention for her looks.

Christina was scouted as a model by clients in her local hair salon, but has admitted that in the first instance, nobody ever glanced twice at her.

No, because I was a goth and a little punk in high school. I had knee-high Doc Martens, a leather jacket, black, purple and red hair and black lipstick. So no one was saying, You beauty! Yeah, get her in the magazines! she joked to Stylist magazine.

The actress who is renowned for her fabulous curves thanks the salon clients who spotted her potential and made her believe that she had the looks to carve out a modelling career. Her big break came when she landed up in the final of a Seventeen magazine cover competition.

I used to work as a receptionist and shampoo girl at a hair salon and some of the clients would tell me I should be a model, even though I looked a little kooky at the time. One day my mum came in and overheard someone say it, and shed literally just seen a contest to be on the cover of Seventeen magazine, she explained. A local photographer took my pictures and we sent them in and I made it to the finals. I did some bridal magazine work and lingerie shoots for department stores and eventually I had enough pictures to show an agency, and they signed me up.

Christina has revealed that although she enjoyed modelling at the time, it never satisfied her craving to act. She says although the job allowed her to be creative, she knew she had to give it up at some point to follow her acting dream.

To me it was sort of freeze-frame acting. I liked being able to be creative and become a character but I grew up wanting to be an actress and doing community theatre, she added. (C) Cover Media
