Christina Ricci says misogyny still exists it is just "more subtle".
The actress is currently starring in TV series Pan Am, which follows a flight crew in the 1960s.
Christina is fascinated by the era and in particular the relationship between the sexes.
"In 1963 women had to deal with misogyny head-on every day," she told the British edition of Hello! magazine. "Nowadays, misogyny is more subtle. Men and women are still treated very differently. In a way there must have been something liberating about knowing what the rules were, what was off-limits to a woman. Some of the rules were even written down stewardesses were told how much they should weigh. As an actress I have to stay in shape, but that was something different."
The 31-year-old hopes that the series will continue on for many years. She wants to recreate some important moments in American history.
"That is what is so exciting about doing this series," she explained. "If we run for a couple of years we will be able to show the rise of the civil rights movement, the protests against the Vietnam War and the space race."
