Rating: 3/5

Kollywood is definitely improving...

Whenever Dhanush collaborates with his elder brother Selvaraghavan, the actor in him flourishes more. But this time, in Mayakkam Enna, the actor hasn't just flourished, but excelled, as the film highlights the acting talent of Dhanush and skills of Selvaraghavan.

Brilliantly conceived, neatly written and well shot, Mayakkam Enna is a significant movie of Tamil cinema, in the recent times. The film which deals with the emotions of human beings (like most movies of Selvaraghavan do) is so distinct that it cannot be classified under any other category.

Mayakkam Enna is about Karthik Subramaniam (Dhanush), a freelance photographer, who is ready to do all kinds of photography work, be it marriage, corporate functions or portfolios. He lands with his camera and lens wherever photography is in demand.

But he has an ambition in life, to become an assistant to Madhesh Krishnaswamy (Ravi Prasad) a world famous wildlife photographer. In the meantime, Karthik has his own set of friends whom he meets on regular intervals.

During one such meeting, Karthik meets Yamini (Richa Gangopadhyay), who is the lady love of one of his friends Sundar (Sundar). Karthik and Yamini don't gel with each other as their ideas are different. But soon, things start changing and opposite poles attract.

Dhanush delivers his best performance till date. His myriad emotions elevate the movie to a great extent. The scenes especially in which he expresses guilt stand apart. Richa Gangopadhyay is a debut in Tamil cinema and will flourish here if she selects right films.

G V Prakash Kumar's music, songs as well as background score, add immense strength to Selvaraghavan's script. So does cinematography by Ramji. His lens has apparently traveled on the shoulders of Selvaraghavan to shoot all his ideas. Kola Bhaskar's editing is crisp and neat.

The only minus point of Mayakkam Enna is a little lag in the second half. But there is no denial that the film proves once again that Kollywood keeps improving with every movie.
