Debbie Harry: Freak out in cities

4th May 2011

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Debbie Harry wants every city to have a place where people can go and be freaks.

The Blondie frontwoman has discussed the origins of her track Mother, which many thought was about her quest to find her biological mother. Adopted Debbie revealed the song is actually an ode to a nightclub in New York which she frequented a great deal as a young woman, but has since shut.

It was a major part of my life for a long time They had themed nights and I would dress up and go see funny people doing funny things with a lot of sexual stuff going on. What sort of things? Naughty things, she explained. I went dressed as a priest and as a geisha. It was demented. Every city needs a place where you can go and just freak out. Or be a freak.

The 65-year-old confirmed there might be other aspects to the song, but she decided against discussing them.

Debbie added she has looked for her mother in the past, after deciding shed like to know where she came from. The star was adopted when she was three months old and raised in New Jersey.

I did send a private detective to find her, she told Q. She was in her 80s and she wanted her privacy, which I respect. (C) Cover Media
