Dennis Quaid has recalled the moment he thought he might be "dead in five years" if he continued to abuse drugs.

The Hollywood actor entered rehabilitation for cocaine addiction in the 90s. He has blamed his sudden thrust into fame for his trouble with the substance.

"One night I realised I was going to be dead in five years if I didn't change my ways," he told Total Film.

"The next day I was in rehab. We all make mistakes in life, no matter how much we think we have it together. It's about forgiving yourself for your own mistakes. If I hadn't gone through that period, I don't know if I'd still be acting."

The 58-year-old father of three has managed to overcome his addiction, scoring roles in hit films. He is now busier than ever with movies The Words, What to Expect When You're Expecting and Playing the Field.

"I did have a very busy past year last year," he confessed.

"As you go through your career I think it's about keeping the fire alive inside you. And today, I have that fire burning probably even more than when I was in my twenties. Maybe it's because I feel so lucky to still be here."
