Department: Movie Review

18th May 2012

Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Rana Daggubati

Director: Ram Gopal Varma

Rating: 1/5

A 'Department' with a lost direction...

A close up shot of Rana Daggubati chasing a con and knocking him down, followed by his conversation with a misfit dubbing. This is how Ram Gopal Varma’s Department welcomes the audience.

There is hell lot of bloodshed, sleaze language and of course, dragged action sequences. After the movie got over, there was just one thing that came to mind. What The Hell!!! There couldn't have been a better torture for the viewers after Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag.

‘Department’ is a secret organization created by the government to eradicate the underworld actions. Led by Mahadev (Sanjay Dutt), the team composes Shiv Narayan (Rana Daggubati) and others. They are hell bound to wipe out the two deadly gangs of Sautya (Vijay Raaz) and Gauri (not revealed even after the movie ends). There are no limits and restrictions for this team for bloodshed. But the story is upturned after the entry of Sarje Rao (Amitabh Bachchan), the deadly Minister.  What happens further is an impeccably intolerable underworld gang story.

Sajay Dutt, Rana Daggubati and Amitabh Bachchan have done justice to their roles, but the rest of the cast is not worth remembering. Even a talent like Vijay Raaz is not properly executed in the movie.

Lot of close ups shots, not-so feature film camera angles- this is typical Ram Gopal Verma direction. With weak script and not so impressive screenplay and unnecessary songs, one cannot enjoy a thriller movie.  Even the item song by Nathalia Kaur is gravely not enjoyable. The music is mostly forgotten by the time the movie sees its end.

With Gauri not revealed and with only his voice heard at the end of the movie, we can expect a Department two in the making.

Let us hope for a better part-2.
