Duke of Cambridge beats wife in boat race

4th July 2011

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - The Duke of Cambridge gave his new bride a consolation hug today after his team beat hers during a friendly dragon boat race across Dalvay Lake in Canada.

The newlyweds are visiting Prince Edward Island as part of their 11-day tour of Canada and the US, and battled it out despite the blustery conditions.

They both led local teams of athletes although before the race Britain's Prince William was decidedly more confident than wife Catherine.

"We are of course," he exclaimed when asked who would win the race.

But Catherine was less sure and said she was "feeling slightly nervous" about her chances.

William's team won by a third of a length and although he gave Catherine a hug to console her loss, was thrilled with his victory.

"No chivalry!" he quipped while accepting his bottle of Champagne.

Catherine was dressed down for the challenging water race but still looked elegant. She wore slim navy trousers and a black jacket and seemed to enjoy every second of the race.

It is not the first time Catherine has enjoyed such pursuits she trained for a cross channel race in 2007 with all girl team The Sisterhood to raise money for charity but had to pull out just before the event for fears her presence would attract too many photographers.

The royal couple are said to both have competitive spirits and enjoy going against each other in tennis and skiing. William told reporters that Catherine beats him at both sports but he is better at others. (C) Cover Media
