Elton John: I wont release new material

1st November 2010

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Sir Elton John has vowed never to release another pop song because he doesnt think his work is as good as other modern artists.

The iconic singer has a string of hits under his belt, including Your Song and Rocket Man and has sold over 250 million records since his first release in 1969. Despite his success, the 63-year-old thinks its time to stop making new music. He doesnt think he can compete with stars such as the flamboyant Lady Gaga, so has decided to focus his attention elsewhere.

Look, Im 63. I dont want to be on VH1 or MTV. Im not going to compete with JLS or Lady Gaga, he told GQ magazine.

Im at that stage where I dont think I can write pop music any more. I cant sit down and do a proper rock song. It was OK when I was 25 or 26, but not anymore. I like to do my little side projects like Scissor Sisters and have fun, but I dont think Elton John will be putting any pop singles out.

Elton released his latest album, The Union, last month. Its a record of duets with American musician Leon Russell, and something Elton is proud of. Speaking about it last week, he admitted music promos are one of the reasons he will no longer make pop music.

I cant make pop records anymore and I hate videos. I just watched VH1 and it makes me want to vomit, he said. Ive made 40-odd albums. People arent screaming for another Elton John record Im not screaming to make another record. (C) Cover Media
