Farewell Shammi - a legend passes away

14th August 2011

Born with a silver spoon or not, struggle was written in his fate... son of the legendary actor Prithviraj Kapoor and brother of 'showman' Raj Kapoor, Shammi Kapoor was heavily shadowed and had a lot to live upto; but he wanted to make it big and BIG he was. The "Yahooo...Jungleee Man" won many hearts and was still a favourite of many, even after he bid farewell to the silver screen.

The legend is no more...
On the morning of 14th August, i.e. today, at around 5:15 a.m., Shammi Kapoor breathed his last.

Born to Prithviraj Kapoor as Shamsher Raj Kapoor, he always knew that there would be critical analyses of his performances, considering the fact that his brother was already an established artist. His initial days were of intense struggle ans was not considered much more than just a brother of Raj Kapoor. With the 1957, Nasir Hussain's film 'Tumsa Nahin Dekha' things finally started to look-up. When he entered the industry, he sported a very conventional, typical look but slowly, he realised the need to be different and with 'Tumsa Nahi Dekha' he came up with a new look for himself; styled after the western sensation of that era, Elvis Presley.  After this movie, there was no looking back.

This young, handosme bachelor, the heart-throb of  many, got married to Geeta Bali, a popular, yesteryear actress of Hindi cinema. This marriage, surprisingly, didn't affect his popularity but unfortunately for him, Geeta passed away very yound after being stricken by small pox.  She left behind two small children, a son named Aditya and a daughter , Kanchan. Shammi Kapoor married his second wife, Neela Devi Gohil from the royal family of Bhavnagar, in 1969.

He soon put his life back on track by immersing himself in work and the cult classic 'Junglee', made him the favourite of many. He was not only the audience's favourite but also won many awards and accolades.

Even after he bid adios to his film career, he always had a very charming effect on many. In spite of his medical condition going from bad to worse, he didn't lose hope and thanked God for whatever he had given him. This "Yahoo" man, full of energy and high spirits for life, was truly a magnificient influence and a legend in the truest sense.

The actor was on dialysis for the last couple of years and was admitted to Breach Candy Hospital a week ago.

Fridaymoviez offers condolences to the bereaved family and may he rest in peace.
