Film stars get on the battle field
9th May 2011
After the World Cup and the on-going Indian Premier League provided enough doses of entertainment and sports to the Indian fans, there are now film stars who are coming on the sports field. It seems that the sports bug has bitten the entertainment industry stars as they are all set to kick start the Celebrity Cricket League (CCL). The league comprises of actors from the Hindi, Kannada, Tamil and Telugu film industries, that will kick-off from June 4th in Bangalore at Chinnaswamy stadium.
The Kollywood team will take on the Tollywood team, while the Sandalwood team will meet the Bollywood team in Bangalore. Chennai, Vizag and Hyderabad are the other venues. While Hyderabad will host the final on June 12th, the other venues will host two matches each.
The Bollywood team is led by Salman Khan, the Sandalwood (Kannada) team by Sudeep, Tollywood (Telugu) team by Venkatesh and Kollywood (Tamil) team by Suriya.
On March 5th, an exhibition match was held in Vizag between the Bollywood team and the rest of the teams combined. Despite being held right in the middle of the ICC World Cup, more than 25,000 people turned out to watch the film stars battle it out on the cricket field. Each of the teams was auctioned for a minimum bid of Rs 16.5 crore. The proceeds go the respective artistes' associations.
Ashok Kheny, the owner of Sandalwood team, 'Karnatak Bulldozers,' said:"This year there are only four teams but I have been told there have been inquires not just from other film industries in India but also from Pakistan and Sri Lanka. CCL is set to become a very big event."
For a cricket frenzied nation, what better than their favourite entertainment stars pulling up their socks for the gentleman's game.
