Florence Welch: Music saved me

The British songstress lead singer of Florence + the Machine revealed immersing herself in song has allowed her to embrace positivity in her life.

The 24-year-old singer, whose hits include Dog Days are Over and Rabbit Heart (Raise it Up), says practicing her vocals in her bedroom prepared her for a life on stage.

"I would find songs and they would totally save me. It was just me alone, in my bedroom, dancing by myself, wearing weird clothes," she explained in an interview with Nylon magazine. "Now I do it on stage, but I had a lot of practice."

Florence explains that she expresses how she feels through her songs. The singer says although she isn't very good at talking about her emotions, she finds it easier to perform how she feels instead.

"It's funny because I'm not actually very good at saying how I feel in person. I think song writing is a way for me to deal with my own emotional failings in life. When I'm making a song, it's almost as if I can express how I feel," she revealed. "It's almost as if, to get a message across to one person, you have to sing it to a couple of thousand!"

Florence insists it's easy to be whoever you want to be while performing. The redheaded musician has joked that she leaves her clumsy streak for off stage.

"When you're singing you can escape yourself, and lose yourself in the music. I can at least pretend to be graceful, then I come off stage, fall over, and scuff my knees," she smiled. (C) Cover Media
