Rajesh Khanna fondly called as "kakaji" will be celebrating his 69th birthday today.

Rajesh Khanna was born on 29th December 1942. He was adopted and raised by friends of his biological parents.

In 1966, he joined bollywood after winning an 'All India Talent Contest' making his film debut in "Aakhri Khat", which went unnoticed.Rajesh Khanna was an extremely popular star of the 1970s. He is famous for acting in romantic melodramas, and he was famously paired with Mumtaz or Sharmila Tagore.Some of his successful films include "Aradhana", "Sachaa Jhutha", "Haathi Mere Saathi", "Amar Prem", "Do Raaste", "Anand", "Avtar" and "Souten". From 1969 to 1973, he had 15 consecutive hits. Several of the popular songs sung by Kishore Kumar in the 1970s were picturised on Khanna which garnered him further fan following.

In 1969, he achieved overnight stardom with Shakti Samantha's "Aradhana", in which he played a dual role of father and son. He became the craze of the nation, the first actor to be known as No. 1 superstar of Hindi films and remained so for next six years. During 1991-1996, Rajesh Khanna was a Member of Parliament for the Congress Party. In 2001-2002, Rajesh Khanna played major roles in two TV serials – "Aapne Parai" (B4U & DD Metro) and "Ittefaq" (Zee TV).

During his career, he appeared in 163 films of which 105 had him as the solo lead hero and 21 were two hero projects. He won three Filmfare Best Actor Awards and was nominated for the same fourteen times. He received the maximum BFJA Awards for Best Actor (Hindi) – four times and nominated 25 times. He was awarded the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005. Rajesh Khanna is considered to as the “First Superstar” of Hindi cinema.
