(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Jim Sturgess thinks romance is "scary" and sometimes love "sucks".

Jim co-stars alongside Anne Hathaway in romantic comedy One Day. Jim plays Dexter, the soul mate of Anne's character Emma. Following Emma and Dexter's unconventional relationship over the course of two decades, the movie's narrative does not follow traditional romance formulas.

Jim appreciates One Day's approach to the classic love story, as he believes the development of love is rarely linear. He also recognises that commitment phobia, a theme touched on in One Day, is fairly commonplace.

"[One Day] isn't that 'love at first sight' [film]. It feels a lot more like real life to a lot of people," Jim explained to USA Today. "It sucks to love someone that you don't think loves them back, and vice versa. It's scary to commit to somebody and know that they are the one true love of your life. That's not a reality for a lot of people."

Steering away from the love at first sight premise allowed Jim to redefine his thoughts about amour. His perspective on the subject has broadened as a result.

"I just thought it was a really good take on a love story where it didn't follow the generic path of a romantic comedy or a heavy-set drama," Jim said. "You could dip into these people's lives and you could get a much bigger take on a love story than just two people falling in love."
