Joan Collins regrets Dynasty outfits

13th December 2010

(Cover) - EN Star Style - Joan Collins has slammed some of the ridiculous outfits she wore in Dynasty.

The actress portrayed Alexis Carrington in the American drama, and was famous for the extravagant costumes she wore. She designed most of them herself, and although she initially loved the shoulder-padded-power-suit look, she admits it went too far in the end.

There were some dreadful things some hideosity with enormous purple shoulder pads and too much jewellery and too-big hair, she said. In the beginning, Alexis was quite chic. But as Aaron [Spelling, the producer] brought other actresses in, they wanted to have this look. So he said, Well, Alexis has got to be more over-the-top than them. At the end, some of the clothes got a bit too ridiculous.

Joan got the initial idea for Alexis look from high-fashion runways, and is glad the character looked so different to the other women on the programme. She wasnt a fan of the floaty look which was en vogue at the time, preferring something a bit starker.

When I came [to the show in the second season], the look for women was slacks, silk shirt and a lot of flowy hair. Pierre Cardin and Yves Saint Laurent had just brought out this whole new look in Paris big shoulders, tiny waist and I said to Nolan [Miller, costume designer], Why dont we start doing this? explained Joan.
