(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Kirsten Dunst "almost laughed" at the apocalyptic ending of Melancholia.
The American actress stars in the upcoming Lars von Trier-directed drama film. It revolves around the lives of two sisters, while Earth is about to collide with a rogue planet.
Kirsten says the overwhelming ending when Earth is destroyed by planet Melancholia, had an unusual effect on her.
"It's difficult [to explain] because everyone has a different emotional reaction to it. It's a very intimate story," she told BBC Breakfast. "The first time I saw it in the theatre, I almost laughed. It's one of the wildest film endings I've ever seen."
Kirsten plays Justine in the film who suffers from depression. Her character declines into cynicism in the second half of the film. However she also appears stronger in light of the impending events.
Kirsten says her complicated character made for awkward viewing.
"[Justine] really transforms through the film. It's uncomfortable to watch yourself being vulnerable," she explained. "It was weird watching myself, my voice changed."
Kirsten worked closely with von Trier for the movie. The Danish filmmaker is famed for his controversial approach.
Kirsten enjoyed understanding the 55-year-old director a little more due to their very personal working relationship.
"To me, he was very vulnerable. He opened up about his struggles. I had a very intimate relationship with him," she revealed. "Playing something that he's suffered..."
Kirsten won the Best Actress Award on the Cannes International Film Festival for her performance in Melancholia. The star has teased that she is looking towards garnering an Oscar award for her portrayal in the film.
"It would be really exciting," she smiled. "It would be fun for me. My family would be so happy to see that!"
Kirsten is proud of her varied film career. The 29-year-old star has appeared in Hollywood blockbusters and independent films alike something which she is thrilled about.
"I've always balanced the Spider-Man with the Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I've had a good mix of blockbusters and independents," she smiled.
"I've never felt boxed in to one type of film." (C) Cover Media
