Kristin Cavallari ended her first engagement with Jay Cutler in hopes that their relationship would "get better."

The 24-year-old The Hills star and her fiance Jay decided not to get married in July.

The couple announced that their engagement is now officially back on last month.

With their wedding plans in motion again, Kristin reflects on why they decided to move forward with their nuptials.

"Sometimes, in order for things to get better, they have to end even if it's momentarily," Kristin told People at the opening of Rebecca Taylor Boutique in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

"And that was the case with us."

Kristin and Jay never lost touch when their engagement was off. They were happy to communicate with each other despite their split.

"No one really knows what happened between the two of us, and we want to keep it that way," she explained.

"We broke up, and we were still talking during that whole time."

Kristin admits that she and Jay still had romantic feelings for each other while they were separated.

"We didn't break up because of love lost," the actress revealed.

"We loved each other just as much as we always did when we weren't together."

Kristin and Jay are planning to wed in 2012.
