(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Lady Gaga was not harmed when an earthquake hit Japan earlier today, and she has urged people to visit the "beautiful" country.

The eccentric pop star is currently in Tokyo, where she attended a press conference to promote MTV Video Music Aid Japan a charity event taking place this weekend. Gaga feels a close connection to Japan and is hoping people will still come to the country in the wake of the devastating earthquake and tsunami which hit in March.

"I can't say enough to people all over the world that the majority of Japan right now, Japan in general, is very safe," she said at the conference. "The most important thing, and the best thing, we could do for Japan right now is to boost tourism, and so everyone come to Japan and come enjoy the beautiful country.

"I would like to use my position here today and all week long to run around Tokyo and enjoy the beautiful city, and kiss all the beautiful little monsters and scream at the top of my lungs that everyone should visit this beautiful place."

An earthquake measuring 6.7 in magnitude struck in the north-eastern part of the country earlier today, but Twitter reports confirmed the star was "fine" and "unharmed".

Gaga wiped away tears and drank from a coffee cup bearing the message Pray For Japan during the conference. The singer - who has already contributed a song to a charity album for Japan plans to auction the cup to raise money for the victims of the natural disaster.

After performing at the MTV Video Music Aid Japan on Saturday, she will move to Taiwan. The star is scheduled to take to the stage there on July 3.

Japanese officials have shown their gratitude for Gaga's support by presenting her with a Papier-mch doll which symbolises courage and perseverance. (C) Cover Media
