Madonna: I should be tougher

18th April 2012

Madonna wishes she was a "tougher" parent.

The music superstar admits it can be a struggle to juggle her demanding career with raising four children. In an excerpt from an interview for US TV Show Rock Center, which appeared on the Today show on this morning, Madonna was quizzed on her reaction to her daughter smoking.

Teenager Lourdes was recently photographed puffing on a cigarette, and while the 53-year-old star wasn't impressed she admits she could have been tougher when tackling the issue.

"I wasn't very happy, but honestly, I don't think I'm as tough as I should be," Madonna said. "I think I need to be maybe tougher. It's hard - every day is a negotiation. But cigarette smoking I'm not very fond of - for anyone."

The star was then quizzed on her decision to smoke in the music promo for her recent single Girl Gone Wild. When asked if she worries that her behaviour will influence her kids, Madonna insists she leads a healthy lifestyle.

"I don't smoke, that's just an accessory. She smoked that cigarette before I did that video, so she didn't get that from me," she replied.

Madonna went on to explain that her family see a very different side to her when they are at home.

"To my children, there's the one that comes home and says, 'Are you doing your homework? Why did you say that? What are you eating that for?'" she added.

Madonna also spoke about the pressures of fame.

Being one of the biggest stars in the world has its drawbacks and she is rarely out of the public spotlight. She admits being a single mother and a successful musician is tough.

"I imagine it must be [hard being me]... because I complain all the time," she laughed. "I think we all have our challenges to be a single mother of four and work as much as I do [and] live my life in a metaphorical fishbowl... it's pretty challenging. But so far I've survived with sanity and humour intact."

Although she has been releasing hit music since the 80s, Madonna shows no signs of slowing down. The star is currently promoting her new album MDNA, which has topped charts all around the world. She has vowed to continue singing for as long as she feels passionate about music.

"I certainly have stuff left to say, I still feel like expressing myself," she smiled. "I'll keep doing this as long as I do."
