Madonna has slammed Karl Lagerfeld for calling Adele "fat", insisting his comments were "ridiculous".
The creative director of Chanel has come under fire for criticising the British singer's appearance. Many stars have shown support of Adele, and Madonna has now added her voice to the debate. She believes Adele is hugely talented and her weight shouldn't be an issue.
"That's horrible. That's ridiculous, that's just the most ridiculous thing I've ever heard," she told British newspaper The Sun. "I don't like it when anybody says anything bad about anyone I don't like it. Adele's a great talent and how much she weighs has nothing to do with it."
Madonna also spoke of her grief following the death of Whitney Houston last month. The 53-year-old star has recalled being in awe of the late singer when their careers were both taking off and feels saddened by her demise.
"When these things happen, I'm always shocked by the first thing you say 'It's such a loss' which doesn't quite cover it. Then you reflect and you think, 'How did it happen? How did the people around them allow it to happen?'" Madonna mused.
"I remember looking at her singing and hearing people talk about her, and just thinking, 'Oh my God. She's such a beautiful woman and my God, what an incredible voice. I wish I could sing like that.' I just remember being extremely envious of her and also touched by her innocence
"And I was thinking, 'We are all innocent at one stage in our life. It's just interesting, the paths our lives take.'
"I was struck by that how well she started and where she ended up and the tragedy of it."
Madonna went on to address the controversy surrounding her performance with M.I.A. at the NFL Super Bowl.
During her half time show, audiences complained after seeing M.I.A. make a rude hand gesture. Madonna can understand why people were so upset.
"We were in the sacred ground of football and I think that it's a very important and well-viewed event," she explained. "It was accepted and understood by everyone performing that we would be politically correct.
"I think the NFL were more worried about me than anything else, thinking that I was going to do something crazy or provocative. And I really had no intention of doing something shocking."
Madonna is embarking on a tour this year, to showcase her new MDNA album.
She is looking forward to going back on the road, but admits she is "incredibly anxiety-ridden" about ensuring she entertains her fans around the world.
