A potent story and loads of money go wasted as the execution falls flat
A remake is no easy task, especially when it has to be made as a period film. Prashanthand his father Thiyagarajan, while remaking Malayur Mambattiyan, have ensured that it is a grand fare, but failed to sustain the grip and momentum the original version provided. As a result, all the since efforts and the hard work the duo took to shoot Mambattiyan vanish in thin air. The only saving grace is Prashanth's toned physique and his neat performance. Meera Jasmine and Mumaith Khan are also there to provide some solace.
Thiagarajan, the producer and the director of the film, has made sure that the production values are much higher when compared to the original version. But still, he fails to hold the interest of the audience. Mambattiyan (Prashanth) lives in a village in western Tamil Nadu. When his parents are killed by a landlord (Kota Srinivasa Rao) for questioning him, Mambattiyan takes revenge by killing the rich man and eight others. Even as the police department led by DIG Ranjith (Prakash Raj) starts a hunt for Mambattiyan, he takes refuge in the forest with his gang of friends. Enters Kannatha (Meera Jasmine) in his love, who shower all love and affection. At one point of time, Mambattiyan decides to go out of the place with his ladylove. But Ranjith and fate have other plans for him.
Prashanth is rock solid as Mambattiyan. He recreates his father's magic and even goes a step higher than that. Meera Jasmine's acting skills don't need an explanation. Prakash Raj is good as a cop, while Vadivelu fails to evoke even a smile. Thaman's music is average. But watch out for the remixes of Kattu vazhi pora... and Chinna ponnu selai... Special effects by Prashanth are good, while cinematography and editing departments have done their job well.
