The 40-year-old Hollywood actor's father Kent Telfer Damon has been treated by doctors at Massachusetts General Hospital for a rare blood disease called multiple myeloma.

Matt, who was born in Cambridge, Massachusetts, flew home last night to thank doctors personally, and made a heartfelt tribute.

"My family is so grateful for the care you've given us," he told staff at the hospital's One Hundred Celebration at the Westin Hotel, according to People.

"It's deeply humbling to see how many people here are committing their lives to helping others."

Matt attended the fundraiser alongside Kent, who is currently in remission, and other family members including wife Luciana Barroso. He spoke of his sadness at his father's illness.

"We've lost some close personal friends to cancer in recent years, but I never thought it would happen to my dad, the marathon runner," he explained. "It sucked."

Kent was feeling sentimental on the night, and took the opportunity to praise his famous son. He thanked Matt for being the perfect child.

"He's all you could ever for ask for in a son," he smiled. "It's been a wonderful ride being his dad." (C) Cover Media
