Mel B: Shrek Forever After premiere was tough

6th September 2010

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Mel B has broken down in tears recalling the turmoil she felt when Eddie Murphy invited their daughter to the Shrek Forever After premiere.

The former Spice Girl was involved in a highly-publicised paternity battle with the Hollywood actor in 2007, when it took a DNA test to prove he was the father of their daughter Angel Iris, now three. Mel claims that since then Eddie has had little to do with the tot, although he has recently started to bond with her more.

Mel was shocked when father-of-eight Eddie invited Angel Iris and the rest of Mel's family to the Los Angeles premiere of his movie, Shrek Forever After, in May because the actor had previously been so absent in their daughter’s life.

“We got asked to go to the Shrek premiere. Angel is three-and-a-half and I didn't expect her real biological father to all of a sudden pop back in our lives,” the star told her family therapist in a scene from her new reality television show, Mel B: It's A Scary World. “Do I really want to be on a red carpet yet again, entertaining everybody else's world, like, ‘Ooh, we're a happy family’ and ‘Ooh, Eddie's back in our life?’

“It brings up all that pain and all that hurt that I went through by myself, pregnant.”

The singer went on to discuss how bleak her life was when she was involved in the paternity battle with Eddie, who questioned whether he was the child’s father before she was born.

“I had to move to the beach, I had paparazzi following me everywhere. I had people calling me a gold digger, saying that I got pregnant on purpose. It was a horrible time,” she recalled.

Mel’s husband-of-three-years, movie producer Stephen Belafonte, also attends the therapy session, and Mel is open about their relationship. The 35-year-old star explains Stephen always supports her, and helps care for Angel Iris and Mel’s ten-year-old daughter Phoenix Chi from a previous relationship. “Stephen is the stepfather to both of my daughters,” she said.
