Michael Jacksons doctor cleared medication away

The 50-year-old pop icon died on June 25 2009 of acute Propofol intoxication by intravenous injection of another. Propofol is a powerful anaesthetic usually given to surgery patients to help them sleep.

Murray, Jacksons personal physician, has been charged with his involuntary manslaughter, which he denies. A preliminary hearing began in Los Angeles this week, during which it will be decided if he should face a full trial. It will last around two weeks.

Yesterday, paramedic Martin Blount took to the stand and said he saw Murray tidying away medication while people were battling to revive Jackson. He admitted being surprised, as medical professionals had been told Jackson had been given no drugs.

I saw three small bottles of Lidocaine, he said. He scooped them off the floor and put them into a black bag.

Lidocaine is a common local anaesthetic.

Blount alleged Murray wanted to use a hypodermic needle on the singer at one point, but was stopped. The doctor also apparently seemed frantic and sweaty as Jackson was being treated.

The paramedic added that he believes Jackson had been dead for at least 20 minutes before he and other professionals got to the scene. Murray allegedly told him the singer had only fallen unconscious a minute before emergency services were called.

Blounts partner Richard Senneff has previously testified that he initially thought Jackson was a hospice patient when he got to the scene, due to an IV stand in the room. He also said Murray did not tell him the singer had been given Propofol.

The court also heard Murray had conducted a number of phone calls in the hours before Jacksons death, when he should have been monitoring the star. The doctor allegedly had 11 discussions on the phone in the five hours before the singer died. He apparently took three calls one after another, lasting a total of 45 minutes, after which he realised Jackson was no longer breathing.

Jacksons family, including his mother and father Katherine and Joe Jackson, have been attending the hearing. (C) Cover Media
