A good try but only partly successful!

Selva is a name to credit with commercial ventures and one good example is Naan Avan Illai. For the first time, the director has tried his hands at a period subject in Naanga, and he is only partly successful in his attempt.

Though Naanga takes us back to the golden era of the 1980s, it fails to sustain our interest. A disjointed screenplay with too many loopholes mars the flow, with the big relief coming in the form of some breezy scenes.

The film starts when Devi comes out of coma, after being in the hospital for 25 years. Doctors feel it as a medical miracle and the news gets flashed in newspapers and television channels.

A set of people are surprised to see it, as Devi was their friend in the college. They find out Devi's lover Uday (Babu) and all start a journey to meet the friend. In the meantime, each and every one of them have a story of their own and it is narrated one after one. The end comes with a twist, narrating what had actually happened to Devi.

A long list of newcomers (Sanjay Krishna, Babu, Vinod, Nivas, Udhay, Munees, Shakir, Ashwin Raja, Vishnupriya, Shivani and Vaidehi) make their debut. They fit well to their respective roles. Though the  plot was potent, the performances well executed, Selva this time could not pack a punch because of a slow-paced screenplay. The climax to is not very appealing.

Music composer Balabharathi makes a decent re-entry. Cinematography and other technical departments are fair, while the scene stealer is the costumer, who has worked hard to give authenticity with the dress materials.

Director Selva is hugely successful in getting the act right from newcomers. But he fails on the narration and execution part. As a result, Naanga prevents us from enjoying a good story.
