(Cover) - EN Movies - Pirates of the Carribean: On Stranger Tides raked in $90.1 million at the US box office this weekend.
The movie is the fourth in the swashbuckling franchise, and sees Johnny Depp reprise his role as Captain Jack Sparrow. Penlope Cruz and Ian McShane also appear.
The film took $35 million on Friday, $32 million the following day, resulting in a $90.1 million total haul over the weekend.
However, in other countries the movie did even better. It has scored the best global, international and domestic opening of the year having taken $256.3 million internationally. That figure made On Stranger Tides the fifth biggest movie after five days of screening.
Bridesmaids scooped the second spot, making $21 million over the weekend. The movie is directed by Paul Feig and is about a group of women who have to support their friend on her wedding day.
Taking the third spot was Thor with $15.5 million. It earned $238 million internationally, doing particularly well in China, Mexio, Ireland and the UK.
Fast Five made $10.6 million to secure fourth place, while Rio rounded out the top five with $4.6 million. (C) Cover Media
