Parvathy Baul Wants To See Live Margazhi Concerts

13th December 2010

December 13, 2010 (Sampurn Wire): Singer Parvathy Baul, who is renowned for her baul performance across Indian and also abroad, was in Chennai recently. She performed there at the inauguration of a painting exhibition called Earth.

The singer has visited the city earlier also but she said that she has always missed to see the Margazhi concerts, which are considered to be a signature of the city. She is very fond of these concerts and heard a lot about it but unfortunately, she could never see it live. However, Parvathy said that she is not new to the Margazhi format as she stays in Thiruvananthapuram, which hosts several Carnatic concerts.

Parvathys contribution to Baul songs and woodcut prints is praiseworthy. She considers her Chennai visit to be a special one because she was well appreciated by the audience there. Parvathy was in the city for a very short time so she could not take a tour of the city and she is regretting that.

However, she was taken aback by the appreciation by the visual artists on her performance. She thinks that these artists have always praise the baul because it is also an expression of an intellectual mind like their art form.

Parvathy Baul is basically from West Bengal, who has studied visual arts at the Kala Bhavan at Shantiniketan. She has performed throughout India and abroad since 1995.
