Ray Winstone: I hide my squeaky voice

29th December 2010

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Ray Winstone admits he lowers his voice when acting to sound like a man.

The legendary British actor has been in the film industry for the past 30 years, carving a successful career portraying hardened criminals. Often lauded for his gruff voice, Ray admits that he often has to ensure his vocals are deep enough in order to portray the right amount of menace through his characters.

You just kind of fall into it, you dont really think about it. To me Ive got a really squeaky voice, he said. I watch films I done years ago and my voice is high. I suppose when you play a man you want to sound like a man, so you drop it a bit.

Rays latest movie is the British gangster epic, London Boulevard, where he portrays a ruthless criminal. Although seasoned in these types of roles, Ray still ensures that he puts the appropriate preparation into his parts in order to remain believable.

I think voices are like music, when you come to play a part whatever it is you find the tune, he explained. Rather than just talking on a flat note you find the music. Im not brilliant at voices, I have to have time. (C) Cover Media
