Ryan Reynolds: I accidentally fell on girls

17th June 2011

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Ryan Reynolds had no idea how to talk to girls when he was at school, so he would just fall on them during volleyball practice.

The 34-year-old actor claims he was intimidated by the opposite sex when he was growing up, and the only physical contact he had was when he threw himself on them while playing sport. Ryan who is widely considered to be one of the sexiest men in Hollywood insists he wasn't attractive as a teenager and didn't have much luck wooing girls.

"No, not really. Up until I was 18 I looked like a Vietnamese girl," he told Conan O'Brien when asked if he was popular with girls at school. "I remember it took me a while to learn I could actually talk to girls, I used to accidentally' fall on them during volleyball practice. I was like, Oh no I have fallen on you again.' But secretly thinking, This is nice for me.'"

The Canadian-born hunk also failed to impress some of the teachers at his school. Ryan claims the vice-principle at his high school in Vancouver took an instant dislike to him and was hell-bent on making his life a misery.

"We had a vice-principal who just had it out for me, I was a dead man walking from the start. He went to school with my dad and he hated him, and my older brother got kicked out of school for accidentally punching a teacher in the face," Ryan explained. "Our vice principle was called Dr. Mason which always seemed like a sinister name. We always wondered what he had a doctorate in and when we asked him he was always very elusive. In my family we just thought he had a doctorate in asshole. I would see him looking at me like, I'm going to get you Reynolds, you are mine.' It was kind of like a leering look, he looked like an online predator who lost his computer you know, his hands needed something to do."

Ryan went on to reveal he was suspended from school for a while after getting into a fight with two older boys. The star has recalled the uncomfortable incident which resulted in his father being reunited with his former school foe. However, Ryan admits he was rather happy to take a break from his education and spend time watching television instead.

"Sure enough I got hauled down to the principal's office and he had to call my dad in which was just 180lbs of awkward, because these two guys just hate each other," he explained. "Of course I was suspended and later I was kicked out. I always found that so bizarre, that the worst thing they could do to you is make you not go to school. I was like, I am 15 years old, is sitting at home all day masturbating to Spanish soap operas supposed to teach me a lesson? I don't understand how this works!'"

The movie star is well known for his dry sense of humour. Although Ryan loves to entertain people around the world with his sarcastic wit, he admits his quips can be lost on some of his fans in different countries.

"I have trouble in Germany," he replied when asked if people ever fail to understand his jokes. "You know with a movie like Green Lantern, people always ask, If you had a superpower what would it be?' So I usually say something stupid like, I would create a strudel I could cuddle with,' and there are just crickets all around the room. And the German interviewer is like, But it's a strudel, that's a pastry, you don't cuddle with a pastry - that would get messy.' That is something you always have to deal with. I would like someone to create an irony translation app for your phone or something." (C) Cover Media
