Salma Hayek: Marriage hasn’t changed my relationship

13th August 2010

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Salma Hayek says marriage has made absolutely no difference to her relationship.

The actress married François-Henri Pinault, whom she has two-year-old daughter Valentina with, in February 2009. The pair have not always had a good relationship – they separated when Valentina was nine months old, but are now very happy together.

Salma and François don’t live together. She has a home in Los Angeles while he lives in Paris, but the arrangement works well for them. Salma says they are happier than ever, although she doesn’t feel any different now they have tied the knot.

“I knew we had a good relationship, I just didn't ever feel the need to get married. What I wanted was a partner who I could get old with and have children. It is nice being married now but in the end a marriage certificate does not make any difference,” she said.

“I just accept the living arrangements. Of course it would be nice if we could be together more often. But our marriage works this way - it doesn't fit the common rules. But why should I question it because of that? Francois doesn't - he gives me the space I need. But he always supports me, when I need him."

Salma loves being a mother, but is adamant she won’t spoil Valentina. She knows she gushes about the tot to other people, admitting she is “obsessive” about her.

“I even like changing her diapers,” she laughed.

The 43-year-old is keen to ensure Valentina grows up to be a well-rounded individual, and wants her to be used to playing outside. Salma grew up in the countryside and it means a lot to her.

“I know that I need to set boundaries for her. I can be really strict,” she told the German issue of OK! magazine. “For me, it is important that she develops a close relationship with nature. I grew up in the countryside, that's why I feel best when we’re at our country house. When we’re there she gets to spend lots of time enjoying nature. That's one of the greatest gifts."
