Samuel L. Jackson: Lightsaber was my only request

7th March 2011

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Samuel L. Jackson says the only thing he has ever asked for is a purple lightsaber.

The actor played Mace Windu in 2005 movie Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. Even though he was thrilled to land the role he famously had a special request when it came to brandishing the legendary fictional weapon. Lightsabers are traditionally green or red, but Samuel personally asked director George Lucas if he could have a different colour so his Jedi Master character would stand out.

I never asked for anything except a purple lightsaber. George said, Well, lightsabers are either red or green. I said, Yeah, but I would like a purple one, Samuel told Esquire magazine.

The 62-year-old has always felt passionate about movies, even from a young age. Samuel used to go to the cinema every week when he was growing up and films became an important part of his life.

He believes watching such a variety of genres when he was a child has made him appreciate all kinds of movies, so he has been more open when it comes to playing characters.

I went to the movies a lot when I was a kid. That was my joy. Saturday mornings, my mom kicked me out of the house. I went to the movies at nine in the morning and watched cartoons and serials and the double-feature horror picture, and then I would meet her later, he added. So I love movies that way. So Ill do a movie like Snakes on a Plane, and Ill do a film thats very serious. And Ill do a comedy, because its there.

I dont understand how people live without creating, you know? I dont know how you do one picture a year. (C) Cover Media
