The actress wed Ryan Reynolds in 2008, in a secret ceremony in Canada. Their marriage has been blighted by rumours they were experiencing difficulties, and yesterday the pair confirmed they had decided to split.

No official reason has been given for the end of the union, although there is speculation the pair parted ways several months ago. Both are said to be devastated by the split, which was reportedly instigated by Scarlett.

She has confided in friends, a source told Us Weekly. She's been unhappy for a while.

The insider explained the Hollywood stars have been so busy with their respective film careers that they have found it hard to find time to be together.

Ryan is also said to have been spending time with close friends. He has been asking for help and support during the tough time, and those close to him have been only too happy to offer it.

After news of the marriage breakdown emerged yesterday, Scarlett and Ryan were quick to insist it has been amicable.
