(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Sting has composed new works for a musical on Broadway.
The 59-year-old musician is actively getting involved in musical theatre. He has teamed up with Brian Yorkey, Tony Award and Pulitzer Prize winning author and lyricist of hit Broadway show Next To Normal.
Sting is writing songs for an innovative play The Last Ship that is being prepared for readings held in New York City this fall. Brian, who wrote the book and is also directing the play, is eager for Sting to get involved.
"It's Sting's first foray into writing for musical theatre," Brian explained to the New York Times, "so we wanted to start having him meet actors and hear them sing at the earliest possible point."
Although this may be Sting's first venture into Broadway domain, his musical integrity remains intact. Although the score is not complete yet, Sting's sound resonates throughout.
"I won't say the score is complete because the score's not complete until God knows when. But [Sting]'s written a couple dozen, maybe 20, 24, amazing new songs for the show," Brian said.
"He's writing great theatre music. It's very, very distinctly Sting but it also is theatre music. It's not just pop music transposed into the theatre."
Brian is unsure about how audiences will receive the collaboration. The project is unlike anything he has ever done before.
"It's scary because it's different, but that hasn't scared me before. I mean, it has scared me before, but you push forward," Brian said.
The Last Ship is in production and will conduct first readings in October. (C) Cover Media
