The Artist has been nominated for six Golden Globe Awards.
Gerard Butler, Rashida Jones, Sofia Vergara and Woody Harrelson announced the movies in the running for the prestigious accolades at an event held in the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles this morning.
The Artist is a homage to silent movies and received a mention in the best comedy or musical category alongside 50/50, Midnight in Paris and My Week with Marilyn.
Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo appear in The Artist and have picked up Golden Globe nominations. Jean received a mention in the best supporting actor in a film category, which also includes Brendan Gleeson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Ryan Gosling and Owen Wilson.
The female version of the prize will go to Berenice, Janet McTeer, Jessica Chastain, Octavia Spencer or Shailene Woodley.
Woody Allen, George Clooney, Michel Hazanavicius, Alexander Payne and Martin Scorsese are all in the running for the best director gong.
It was a good day for George, who also received a mention in the best actor, drama category. His nomination came from his role in The Descendants. Also featuring in the group is Leonardo DiCaprio for J. Edgar, Michael Fassbender for Shame, Ryan Gosling for The Ides of March and Brad Pitt for Moneyball.
Stars in the running for the best actress, drama prize are Glen Close for Albert Nobbs, Viola Davis for The Help, Rooney Mara for The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, The Iron Lady star Meryl Streep or Tilda Swinton for We Need to Talk About Kevin.
Best actress in a TV drama will be contested by Julianna Margulies, Claire Danes, Mireille Enos, Madeleine Stowe and Callie Thorne.
Stars including Zooey Deschanel, Tina Fey and Laura Linney will battle it out for the best actress in a comedy TV show.
Best supporting actor in a TV series, miniseries or movie will see Peter Dinklage, Paul Giamatti, Guy Pearce, Tim Robbins or Eric Stonestreet triumph.
Vying for the best supporting actress in a TV series, miniseries or movie title are Jessica Lange for American Horror Story, Kelly McDonald for Boardwalk Empire, Downton Abbey star Maggie Smith and Evan Rachel Wood for Mildred Pierce.
Presenter Sofia also got a nod for her role in Modern Family.
Woody read out the coveted best motion picture drama nominees, with The Descendants, The Help, Hugo, The Ides of March, Moneyball and War Horse all getting a mention in the category.
He took the opportunity to poke fun at the awards event, and query why his upcoming picture didn't get a mention.
"Best Motion Picture Drama Rampart, opens January 27 um But I don't see it on the list here. Ha Ha! There's a lot of things left off today, I just want to say," he laughed.
Morgan Freeman will receive the Cecil B. DeMille Award for lifetime achievement.
The 69th Annual Golden Globes Awards will be staged on January 15 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles. The ceremony is being presented by Ricky Gervais, who has hosted proceedings twice before. He caused widespread outrage last year by poking fun at stars including Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie during the ceremony.
