The Devdas craze continues with RK's 'Rockstar'

7th March 2011

Film makers are crazy about the tragic Bengali love saga 'Devdas' based on the novel by Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay. The novella has been made into a film in many Indian languages, including Bengali, Hindi, Telugu, Tamil, and Assamese in India and Pakistan. There are a minimum dozen films made on the subject with Dilip Kumar's 1955 film directed by Bimal Roy and Sanjay Leela Bhasali's 2002 film starring Shahrukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Madhuri Dixit being the most popular ones. A modernized adaptation of the film was made by Anurag Kashyap starring Abhay Deol, Mahie Gill and Kalki Koechlin called 'Dev D' and now comes Imtiaz Ali's 'Rockstar' that is his rock music inspired tribute to the famous love saga 'Devdas'. Ranbir Kapoor plays the title role in the film who conditions himself to fall into love only to find out that his lover does not reciprocates to him. Reportedly Ranbir will die in the film because of his Paro, Nargis Fakhri. But who will be his Chandramukhi is still a mystery.
