Tom Hanks expected bad reviews for Crowne

7th July 2011

(Cover) - EN Movies - Tom Hanks prepared himself for Larry Crowne to receive bad reviews.

The 54-year-old American actor-and-director starred in and helmed the romantic comedy, which also features Julia Roberts as his leading lady.

The picture tells the story of a middle aged man losing his job and deciding to return to college, and prior to its recent release some critics were less-than complimentary. Tom isn't fazed by criticism though, and says negative reviews are something he has come to expect during his lengthy career. He knows many expected the film to be sorrowful because of its subject matter, but argues he isn't in a position to make that type of movie.

"I can already assure you that Larry Crowne will bring me the worst critics ever, in my career!" he exclaimed during an interview with French newspaper Le Parisien.

"With this kind of topic, we tend to imagine depressing movies, with a family evicted on the street on a rainy day, but do you honestly see me, able to make this sort of movie?

"At the end of the day, I will always be this guy who earns millions of dollars and who lives in a big house."

The star was also quizzed on how he would react if he was put in the same position as his character Larry and had the chance to reinvent himself. Tom admits improving his D.I.Y skills would be top of the list.

"If I had to take some classes, I would learn joinery, because I am totally unable to drive a nail and I would also take a literature class, in order to read those big books which are too daunting. Or Greek. That's it, I would become a Greek joiner!" he laughed. (C) Cover Media
