Travis Barker: Music got me through hospital

9th March 2011

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Travis Barker could only think of leaving hospital to play the drums after being involved in a plane crash that claimed four lives.

The Blink 182 star and his musical collaborator DJ AM who died of drug intoxication in 2009 - were onboard a Learjet 60 which crashed shortly after taking off from a Columbian airport in September 2008. The accident claimed the lives of four people, and Travis suffered severe burns.

The Blink 182 star s just grateful that he escaped the horrifying ordeal.

I was so thankful to be alive, he told Kerrang! magazine. My left hand was completely numb and there was a time when [the doctors] were even talking about amputating my foot. All I wanted to do was play the drums and get the hell out of hospital.

The 35-year-old musician feared he would not be able to get behind a drum kit again after enduring 16 surgeries following the accident. He credits his solo album as paving his road to recovery.

Id already recorded two tracks [for the album] before the crash, so once my hands healed and I could grip stuff, I just had to finish it, he explained. For a long time I didnt want to leave [my home] but [the album] got me out of my pad and into the studio.

Travis first solo release Give the Drummer Some, which features collaborations with Tom Morello and Drake, will be released on March 15. (C) Cover Media
