Vinayaga Movie Review

9th January 2012

Cast: Krishnudu, Sonia, Santhanam

Director: Balasekaran

Ratings: 2.5/5

Return of a good actor in an ordinary manner...

Remember Balasekaran, who gave some memorable movies in Tamil cinema in the late 1990s. The man behind films like Love Today and Thulli Thirindha Kaalam, took a break from Kollywood and made it big in Tollywood later.

Now he has brought a hit Telugu film Vinayakudu, to Tamil, as Vinayaga. As the title and promos suggest, it is a 'big fat' love story, which deals about romance between an obese guy and a trendy girl.

With Santhanam to provide comic relief here and there, the movie, with its novel storyline and interesting execution, doesn't make us feel that our time is wasted. But at the same time, there are no big entertainment values as such.

Karthik (Krishnudu), a happy youngster who is overweight, gets selected for a job in an ad agency. There he comes across Kalpana (Sonia), who initially doesn't care for him and finds faults with him, due to their initial interactions at work. As the two become friends, Kalpana meets Rajeev and they both observe that they have a lot of tastes in common. But when they are about to marry each other, Kalpana smells all is not well. What's it and what's the decision she takes is the rest of the story.

It's a doubt whether anyone else than Krishnudu could have fit the bill. He is literally tailor made for this character. Sonia is good as a modern girl who cares for others a little.Santhanam tickles our funny bone with his typical oneliners.

There are a host of other actors including Poonam Kaur and Surjatej who have done a decent job. Music by Shyamprasan is average, while Vairamuthu's lyrics convey the intended message well.

On the whole, Vinayaga has marked the return of a promising director, in an ordinary way. But life always gives another chance.
