(Cover) - EN Showbiz - James Cameron has slammed the recent Clash of the Titans remake as the movie which made people realise 3D had gone too far.
The iconic director is a big fan of the new film technique, which he used in his hugely popular release Avatar. Although he thinks 3D has its place in moviemaking, James worries it is becoming too prolific. He is only interested in seeing is used properly, and rejects the method of adding the effect in post production.
I maintain you can't do a good conversion of a two-hour movie with high quality in a few weeks like they tried to do with Clash of the Titans, he said at the Blu-Con event in Beverly Hills.
I don't mean to throw that movie under the bus because my buddy Sam [Worthington, star of Avatar] is in it, but I think everybody realised that this was a point at which people had gone too far.
James also criticised the decision to try to add 3D to upcoming movie Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1. In the end it was announced the film wouldnt feature the effects, and James believes it was because there wasnt enough time.
The director admits there is a need for 3D post-production, but says it should be reserved for classic movies which were shot decades ago.
My personal philosophy is that post conversion should be used for one thing and one thing only - which is to take library titles that are favourites that are proven, and convert them into 3D - whether it's Jaws or ET or Indiana Jones, Close Encounters... or Titanic, he said.
"Unless you have a time machine to go back and shoot it in 3D, you have no other choice. The best alternative is if you want to release a movie in 3D - make it in 3D." (C) Cover Media
