Sunny Deol's 'Mohalla Assi' finally gets an 'A' Certificate

12th January 2018

The Chandra Prakash Dwivedi directed film 'Mohalla Assi' featuring Sunny Deol, Sakshi Tanwar and Ravi Kishan went on floors in 2011 and was ready for a release. Based on the book "Kashi Ka Assi by Kashi Nath Singh", the movie battled with censor board for past two years.

Finally, great news for the makers of Mohalla Assi as the film is granted an 'A' certificate with only one cut and is ready for an official silver screen release. The producer is delighted to release it before the festival of colours Holi. "We were very disturbed and had a lot of tension, but now I am very excited that it will release," said Vinay Tiwari the producer of the film.

The struggle for the makers started when the application for film certification to Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) was submitted in March 2016. While the reviewing committee refused to issue a censor certificate as they claimed the content of the film to be highly derogatory of humans, culture and religion. The producers then appealed to the Film Certification Appellate Tribunal (FCAT) in November 2016, as the director and the producers were asked to make 10 modifications and resubmit the film for its consideration.

Claiming that the FCAT order had a damaging effect on the theme of the movie, the producers challenged it in Delhi High Court through a writ petition, thereby reserving a certificate. "There's one scene featuring Sunny, in which he uses some wrong language. They wanted that to be removed, that's all. The film gives a message about how foreigners have spoilt the environment in Varanasi and It's a good message'' says Vinay. The only scene cut down in the film is a man dressed as Lord Shiva is seen using abusive language.
