David Yates: Dragon was a dream

8th July 2011

(Cover) - EN Movies - David Yates was thrilled to be able to direct a film with a dragon in it when he took on the final instalment of the Harry Potter franchise.

The British director, who helmed the four most recent Harry Potter films including Order of the Phoenix, Half-Blood Prince, and Deathly Hallows, is currently promoting the concluding chapter of the popular wizard movies, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2.

The 47-year-old filmmaker says he was thrilled to be able to bring bigger elements into the movie, and says having a dragon feature in the film was a particular highlight.

"It was so important for the series to end with a big bang. It was enormous fun to be able to do stuff I've never been able to do before. The four films I've directed, the books have been difficult. They weren't difficult books, they were great books, but they were intimate so I was longing to do a movie that was more of a spectacle. It had a dragon in it for a start!" he laughed in an interview with British newspaper The Independent.

"When I read Hallows, the book, I thought Thank you, I can now do a film with a dragon!'"

David has compared the movie to an epic war picture. He says the raw elements of the film added to the drama that was important to conclude the Harry Potter franchise impressively.

"We always felt we were kind of making a war movie. The way we did the grading and the grain of some of it. I think it is war. And the epicness of it was quite important at this stage of the series to give a real sense of climax to the story," he said. (C) Cover Media
