Elizabeth Taylor honoured at Cannes

20th May 2011

(Cover) - EN Movies - Dame Elizabeth Taylor was paid tribute to at the Cannes International Film Festival last night.

The screen legend passed away in Los Angeles in March, aged 79. Stars honoured her at the 17th annual amFAR Cinema Against AIDS bash held at the Hotel Du Cap, as the organisation was one she was very involved with. She acted as the first chair of the board and did all she could to raise funds throughout her life.

The event was co-chaired by Kenneth Cole and Harvey Weinstein, who both paid tribute to the late actress. Clips of her movies, including Cleopatra, were shown as was footage of her working for the organisation.

"[She] spoke up when others wouldn't and said things when others can't. I hope this will always be part of her legacy," Kenneth said, according to Deadline.

Harvey added: "It was an honour to work beside her and it was an honour to watch her movies."

Stars including Freida Pinto, Janet Jackson, Kanye West, Brooke Shields, Naomi Campbell and Gwen Stefani, turned out for the event, which raised a staggering $10 million. Two pieces of Elizabeth memorabilia helped hit the figure, with an Andy Warhol painting of her raking in $400,000 and another picture raising $150,000.

Sean Penn helped the organisation rake in cash by suggesting the women partiers should refrain from sleeping with their men unless they contributed $10,000 to the pot. It worked 21 males were happy to oblige.

Despite the success of the evening, the biggest story from Cannes remains director Lars von Trier's outburst. He described himself as a "Nazi" during a press conference for his movie Melancholia and also described Israel as a "pain in the ass".

He apologised for the remarks but was labelled a "persona non grata" by organisers, something he has apparently accepted.

"[He] accepts whatever the festival directors want to do to punish him," one of the producers of Melancholia said. (C) Cover Media
