Emma Watson: I rebelled via fashion

19th November 2010

(Cover) - EN Star Style - Emma Watson is happy she can finally wear any kind of underwear she likes.

The actress has played Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter movies since she was 11. She has now shot the final one, which is due out next year, which is in some ways a relief for her. While playing the character Emma, 20, wasnt allowed to change her hair, wear certain clothes or get a tan for continuity purposes, and she is revelling in not having to live by those rules anymore.

I just wasnt allowed to do anything: wasnt allowed to cut my hair, put on nail varnish, tan, wear a bra that made my boobs in any way look [larger], have any flesh showing, wear any make-up when I was playing Hermione, she explained. I always had to back-comb my hair She looks too pretty, take down the blush or the mascara, take it off. Fashion was my rebellion.

The star is known for her dedication to stylish clothing, wowing when she opted for a lace and feather creation for the premiere of the penultimate movie Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part One recently.

The movies are about a group of wizards and witches at school, meaning Emma and her co-stars Daniel Radcliffe and Rupert Grint predominantly wore school uniforms for them. The actress thinks thats one of the reasons she has developed such an interest in clothes off set, as she likes to be able to show her personality.

I have Hermione to thank, in a weird way, for my sense of style, she told WWD. Playing this role, fashion was my way of expressing myself away from that school uniform. When I got the chance to dress myself, I was so thrilled to be able to be Emma and show a different side of myself. Maybe I would never have been this interested in fashion if I hadnt played that role for so long and sometimes felt so constrained by being identified with her so much. (C) Cover Media
