Filmmakers have spoken about 'homosexuality', a topic which is still considered to be a taboo in India, but the credit sure goes to Karan Johar to not only bring this concept to the mainstream commercial cinema, but to also smartly depict the subject to the ever-evolving Indian audiences.
Karan first introduced the commercial audiences to the concept of 'gay' with stylishly leveraging humor in John Abraham and Abhishek Bachchan's film 'Dostana'. The filmmaker sure managed to hit the right chord, as the movie not only turned our Indian audiences to be more open-minded to the idea of 'homosexuality', but in the process Karan also managed to rake in big bucks at the box office.
That was not it, as he subtly planted a gay character played by Rishi Kapoor in his film 'Student of the Year' as well. The audiences sure connected with the character and Rishi also received rave reviews for his performance in the movie.
When the time came to pay an ode to 100 years of Indian Cinema, Karan, very confidently yet again gave another dose of 'homosexuality' with his short story 'Ajeeb Dastan Hai Yeh' in 'Bombay Talkies'.
This time, Karan not only touched the topic with a gay character, but also sensitively handled the emotional struggle of sexuality faced by the character, that for sure hit it with the audiences.
Kudos to Karan for although not talking openly, but cleverly bringing forward this sensitive topic to mainstream Bollywood with his high-profile projects.
