The death of Tamil cinema's favourite on-screen grandmother S N Lakshmi on Monday has shocked many personalities, including Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa.

The end came at a private hospital in Chennai where Lakshmi had been admitted a few days ago. Several film stars thronged her house in Saligramam to pay respects. They fondly recalled their memories with Lakshmi.

In a statement, Jayalalithaa said the veteran actress's death was a great loss to the film world. A recipient of the state government’s ‘Kalaimamani’ and ‘Kalaiselvam’ awards, Lakshmi acted in more than 1,500 films and 6,000 dramas, she recalled.

Lakshmi's memorable performances include "En Annan", "Michael Madhana Kamarajan", "Mahanadhi" and "Kaadhalaa Kaadhalaa". She continued to act in several television serials, including "Thendral" and "Mundhanai Mudichchu", till her last breath.
