Bull and bear

Remaking a yesteryear hit is a huge responsibility always, and if the original is Rajinikanth starrer, the responsibility simply doubles. For there are many films which hit the bull's eye those days just because of the charisma and performance of the Superstar. 'Murattu Kaalai', unarguably, is one among them.

Though Sundar C, the hero of the new version, has tried his best to add life to the proceedings, we tend to compare him with Rajini, which becomes a major dampener to the movie.

But if you watch this as a new film, it is a racy rural tale with all necessary elements one would expect, from a commercial mass masala movie. Sundar and director Selvabharathi deserve kudos on that front.

There is nothing new in terms of story to write home about, as the tale of Murattu Kaalai (a village innocent taking on a wicked rich man) is known to everyone.

But we have something to tell about other factors, especially the performance and technical aspects. Selvabharathi has added some freshness to the screenplay, and the lead actors - Sundar, Sneha, Vivek and Suman-live up to the expectations.

Music by Srikanth Deva is adequate for a masala entertainer. Watch out for the decent remix of 'Podhuvaga en manasu thangam...' Equally enough are cinematography, editing and other departments.

To sum it up, if you are ready to view this Murattu Kaalai without allowing the original version to occupy your mind, it is an enjoyable ride, at least in most parts.
