Oprah Winfrey to receive AMPAS award

(Cover) - EN Movies - Oprah Winfrey is set to receive a humanitarian award from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).

Best known internationally for the annual Academy Awards, AMPAS is dedicated to the advancement of cinema.

As well as preparing the Oscars, AMPAS are planning the 3rd Annual Governors Awards, which will take place on November 12 at the Hollywood & Highland Center.

On Tuesday night the Academy's board of governors voted on who will receive the awards, and it has been revealed that iconic television host Oprah will be honoured with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, which is given to individuals who have made an outstanding contribution to charitable causes.

Oprah s various philanthropic successes include Oprah's Angel Network, the Oprah Winfrey Foundation and the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, which opened in South Africa in 2007 and helps academically gifted girls from impoverished backgrounds.

Writer/director Phil Robinson will produce the ceremony, although it will not be broadcast. Other names to be honoured include actor James Earl Jones and iconic make-up artist Dick Smith, who worked on movies such as The Exorcist and Taxi Driver. (C) Cover Media
