Abigail Breslin: My voice changed during movie

23rd February 2011

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Abigail Breslin had to chipmunkafy her voice while shooting her latest movie because it began to sound deeper as time went on.

The American actress is best known for playing Olive Hoover in 2006s Little Miss Sunshine, which saw her performing a dance routine to Rick James Super Freak.

In her new film Rango, the 14-year-old voices the character of Priscilla. The movie which also features Isla Fisher, Johnny Depp and Bill Nighy - was unlike other animations as the stars didnt work in voice booths, they acted alongside each other. It made the process much more fun, although Abigail was worried when she was recalled as she knew her voice had undergone some changes.

I came in like two or three times to, like, redo some lines and for me, because we first shot it when I was 12 and Ill be 15 in two months, my voice started to change a little bit and Id be like 13 and a half and go in and my voice would sound just different, she laughed to Cover Media. It sounded a little deeper so Id have to, what I call, chipmunkafy my voice a little bit. Kind of like making it a little higher. So that was the only thing, most people in the movie were not having to go through changes in their voices when they filmed it.

Abigail was pleased to get the chance to work alongside the rest of the cast, which she thinks made a big difference to her. She has worked on her own before, and thinks shes more believable when she has other professionals to bounce off.

Ive done voiceovers inside a booth and a lot of times you have to adapt even the way your voice sounds to sound the same as the actor who had come in a month previously and you dont feel the same... obviously its not a bad way to do it because, yknow, its been successful in the past, but I feel its more natural to be able to actually talk to somebody and not just a screen, she explained.

Rango is released in the UK on March 4. (C) Cover Media
