Cheryl Cole: It felt wrong to discuss divorce

21st October 2010

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Cheryl Cole says talking about her personal life for a television interview felt wrong, not cathartic, but she did it to silence rumours about her.

The Girls Aloud singer has had a turbulent year, in which her marriage to soccer player Ashley Cole ended following allegations he was unfaithful. She then contracted malaria during a holiday to Tanzania, and became so ill doctors gave her 24 hours to live.

Cheryl is now fully recovered, and has decided to speak about her experiences in an interview with Piers Morgan to hit screens in the UK on Saturday. In it, she breaks down as she discusses how heartbroken she was when she realised she was getting divorced and refuses to confirm or deny she is dating dancer Derek Hough. The 27-year-old has vowed she will never talk about the intimacies of her life again, but has explained why she decided to do so.

No, it wasnt really cathartic. It felt a bit wrong. I was talking about stuff I wouldnt talk about to my closest friends. I felt I had to though; it was getting so ridiculous with rumours. People were getting ideas Im someone Im not, I needed to get my voice back, she explained on BBC Radio 1. It was almost like it was a soap opera and its my real life. When its all out there on Saturday I can move forward. I would have been nervous to come on here before because people want to know personal things and its not about that, I have great things going on, Ive recorded an album. It was becoming like I was closed in, I was becoming a caricature of myself, my personal life was bigger than anything.

Cheryl briefly discussed her bout of malaria, explaining she thinks she contracted it because she didnt take anti-malaria medication for long enough. She still finds the experience hard to talk about, but did take time to praise the way her mother Joan Callaghan handled it.

Your body aches and your skin hurts to touch. I had blood tests. I was given 24 hours at one point... lets not go there, she said. My mum was strong, she was my rock. I was in and out of consciousness. Yes, Derek helped me. I did Piers Morgan and I spoke about this and its the last time I want to. (C) Cover Media
