Emma Watson: I want to be a normal student

1st November 2010

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Emma Watson had a breakdown when someone asked for her autograph on her first day at university.

The actress is currently studying literature at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island. She opted to continue her education in America rather than England because she thought she would be able to blend in more over there. Emma was concerned students at British universities would only want to talk about her portrayal of Hermione Granger in the Harry Potter movies, so was devastated when some boys approached her asking for an autograph on her first day.

In the end I had a breakdown, she said. Not a hissy fit, more like uncontrollable crying. Everyone looked at me horrified, like, Oh my God! Whats wrong with her? I just said, Id really sorry, but Im here to study and I just want to be a student. Would it be OK if I dont sign, because youll be seeing me around all the time anyway?

The 20-year-old was determined to fully experience student life when she got to America. She lived in a dorm and shared her bathroom with seven other people, and also went to lots of parties.

The star has made some good friends, and remains amazed no one has discussed her in the media or on social networking sites.

One morning I was walking down the corridor from the bathroom in just a towel and I thought I must be mad, anyone could take a picture up my towel and put in on Twitter. But no one did, she told British Vogue. Not even when I had my birthday party - 100 people came and not one put a picture on Facebook.

Emma also opened up about the way appearing in the movies has changed her life. She was 11 when the first Harry Potter movie hit screens, and was totally unprepared for fame. It wasnt until she was around 17 that Emma realised how much money she had the star is rumoured to be worth around 20 million, and was getting a weekly allowance of 50.

I had a money conversation with my dad. By the third or fourth film, the money was starting to get serious, she explained. I had no idea. I felt sick, very emotional. It was a real shock. (C) Cover Media
